THE ELIXIR OF LOVE Opening Night Review SEATTLE OPERA August 6, 2022 Eclectic Arts
THE ELIXIR OF LOVE
Seattle Opera
Music: Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto: Felice Romani
McCaw Hall
Seattle, WA
August 6, 2022
How wonderful it was to be back at the Seattle Opera in the month of August in-person! The usual start of a new season hasn’t happened since August of 2019. We all know what happened after that. Walking into McCaw Hall while it was in the 80’s in Seattle was a surprisingly welcome feeling for this reviewer as it had been so long comparatively.
“The Elixir of Love” proved to be the perfect start to the 2022/2023 season.
A light hearted, comedic affair, the production was up front and out there for the eager audience to appreciate. The story doesn’t have the usual heavy emotional weight and/or tragedy that one may expect from an opera. In that sense, the production is a perfect introductory piece for the curious and the new.
The instant connection between the characters of Nemorino (Andres Acosta) and Adina (Salone Jicia) is easily recognizable by the audience which then creates the rub as they try to like and not like each other. Of course a third party in Sergeant Belcore (Rodion Pogossov) enters the picture and that’s when things get complicated for all involved.
The magical cure all from Doctor Dulcamara (Luca Pisaroni) adds a whole other layer of delicious laughs and folly to behold.
The production was well done, again, it left little to the imagination. This show was well lit and offered a gentle and fun welcome back to the Seattle Opera in the Summer of 2022.
It’s always fascinating to see how material that is nearly two centuries old gets updated to meet today’s societal norms and customs. There were elements of the show that clearly were outdated but I believe that is something you will see in nearly every opera produced by any opera house in present times. The key themes are still there and the show will work for the casual opera patron as well as the seasoned veteran.
“The Elixir of Love” was a fine way to welcome everyone back to the in-person season of the Seattle Opera. This artistic medicine will cure your ailments with a laugh and a smile.
"The Elixir Of Love" runs through August 20th. Purchase tickets here: TICKETS!
