A night of firsts is always an interesting prospect. Having never been to the Substation in Seattle (plenty of opportunities over the years so I certainly knew of the venue) and only recently discovering the bands on the bill (literally the night before), I was looking forward to a new experience on many levels.

The Bellwether Syndicate are back on the road with a much anticipated full length due in 2023. For the faithful (pun intended), the band (in a live setting they are a five piece) bring a mix of goth, post punk, with a few other influences sliding in the mix as well. The new single “Dystopian Mirror” really took on a whole new shape in the concert setting. Older songs like “Republik” and “Night Watch” got the crowd dancing at a feverish pace.  One cover was thrown in for good measure as well.

William Faith and Sarah Rose Faith, along with their live band, really packed a blackened punch that was most welcome. There’s no reason a goth band can’t satisfy the primal callings of a harder edged band and The Bellwether Syndicate did exactly that.

Count me among the fans that are looking forward to the full length in 2023 as well as the subsequent tour!

In the special guest slot, Sweden’s Then Comes Silence performed as a duo (with two members not on the U.S. tour and The Bellwether Syndicate’s drummer Stevyn Grey pulling double duty on this tour) and this incarnation was awe inspiring. They came across as though nothing was different - the uptempo, dark, and mesmerizing set went over well with the fans at the Substation. In support of their new album, “Hunger”, Alex and Hugo and Stevyn made a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. I suspect when they return (and hopefully they do return to the U.S.) as a four piece, they will be making even more waves. A band to get to know - now.

Seattle’s Accolade opened up the show with a tight set of music. Ethereal vocals and a mix of music (both live and programmed) set the mood nicely for the rest of the evening.
