The new film, “Baby Assasins” is billed as a Japanese action comedy. If you are familiar with Japanese films, then you know the word comedy can be interpreted many different ways.
The good news is that the action is definitely the star of the show. The action scenes are entertaining and well choreographed. Action director Kensuke Sonomura is an expert at what he does and it absolutely shows in this film.
The not so good news is the rest of the film. The story is absurdly Japanese (perhaps you’ll enjoy that aspect) and the lead character portrayals by actors Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa are fun at times but also annoying as well.
I would have loved to have seen director Hugo Sakamoto approach this film from a serious angle. It would have been infinitely better in my eyes. Add in an extra action scene or two and this could have been one of the best films of the year.
Instead, “Baby Assasins” is enjoyable for the action scenes but only passable for everything else.
