The absolute confusion of this year helps the viewer relate to the characters in the new horror thriller “Darkness In Tenement 45”. Set in the 1950’s, the film spends the time building up anxiety and paranoia amongst the cast of characters that are trapped in tenement 45.
The overall what and who do we believe in 2020 parallels what the characters face in the film. Is there a sickness outside? Do we have to stay inside? What happens if we let light into the home?
The first half of the film is developed as a slow burn storytelling experience. The second half picks up the pace but never quite reaches the heights it could have.
Nicole Tompkins gives a standout performance portraying Joanna. Her character is frightened, confused, but also strong and direct as the movie develops.
The film reminded me of a play. A lot of dialogue, one location, and the fear that it breeds in the home. Director Nicole Groton could certainly adapt the story for the live stage.
Overall, “Darkness In Tenement 45” was an interesting film worth a viewing.
Best,
