Pacific Northwest Ballet BOUNDLESS March 17 through March 26th Eclectic Arts Media
BOUNDLESS
Pacific Northwest Ballet
McCaw Hall
Seattle, WA
Review: Friday 3/17/23 7:30 pm Performance
The latest mixed bill from the PNB started with the stage premiere, “Wonderland” from Penny Saunders. The world premiere of “Black On Black On Black” by Alejandro Cerrudo. Finishing with another world premiere, “Let Me Mingle Tears With Thee” from Jessica Lang.
I found myself thoroughly enjoying the in-person version of “Wonderland” over the virtual version presented toward the end of 2020. While that seems like a lifetime ago, the vision of bringing the love of live theatre to life through ballet worked on many levels (literally so when dancers were in the theatre itself). Creative, complex, and engaging, this was my favorite number of the evening.
“Black On Black On Black” was up next from resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo. A sensual piece that also engaged me, I enjoyed the contrast from “Wonderland” and I felt this was arguably Alejandro Cerrudo’s best piece I’ve reviewed thus far.
The last program was “Let Me Mingle Tears With Thee”. The longest of the performances on Friday evening, the piece felt overly long. I was a bit lost in the translation from the stage to the patron (which may be my own fault) so when the curtain call came, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. It was my least favorite of the night.
Overall, this mixed bill from the PNB was enjoyable but not a homerun. A mixed bill indeed.
“Boundless” runs through March 26th. Purchase tickets: HERE!
