It’s always interesting to me how fans discover new artists. In the case of powerhouse artist Judith Hill, I came to know her work not through the most known ways. Many saw the documentary film, “20 Feet From Stardom” and others associate Judith Hill with the one and only Michael Jackson. I first came to know her through one of her former touring guitarists RJ. He had a vlog online while he was on tour with her in Europe over four years ago. I liked what I heard and that was the beginning of my musical education with Judith Hill.

Judith Hill and her band family (literally in two cases) are here in Seattle through Sunday March 5th at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley.

For the uninitiated Judith Hill plays a style of music that is a mix of soul, r n b, funk, pop, blues, and a few others. Known for her gut wrenching vocals, she is also an accomplished musician on the guitar and keyboards.

Thursday night the foursome - rounded out by Michiko Hill on keyboards/synthesizers (mom), Pee Wee Hill on bass (dad), and John Staten on the drums - took to the Jazz Alley stage and played a blistering set of tunes for over an hour.

Any musician in the room could tell just how well seasoned all of the musicians on the stage were. From the very first tune, they were in the pocket and off to the races. The groove was already in place and Judith Hill’s vocals grabbed the audience's attention and never let go for the entire set.

There were times when Judith Hill reminded me of the legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe - mainly because of her slinging a Gibson SG - which Sister Rosetta Tharpe was known for later in her career (albeit hers was a cream colored SG with triple humbucker pickups).

Judith Hill and the band jammed a time or three during the set with each member feeding off the others, showcasing their musical prowess.

By the time the set ended with an encore of the popular, “Cry, Cry, Cry”, the audience was completely in awe of what they just witnessed, and of course wanted more.

Pure talent on the stage Thursday night at Jazz Alley, folks. If you were there, you know exactly what I mean.

There are still a few tickets left for the other performances (2 on Friday, 2 on Saturday, and 1 on Sunday). Don’t miss out on an amazing evening of musical talent in the form of the amazing Judith Hill.

Highly recommended!
