OLYMPIC BALLET THEATRE
“Debuts”
February 18, 2023
Edmonds, WA
Edmonds Center For The Arts
The Olympic Ballet Theatre showcased two world premiere pieces in their February show “Debuts”. “From the Dark Land '' with choreography by well known choreographer Donald Byrd and “O.D.D.” from soloist with The Sarasota Ballet choreographer Arcadian Broad.
The first piece was “From the Dark Land”. With two very distinct musical pieces to inspire the choreography, the first music was jarring (and not necessarily in a good way). I understand the impact of the musical choice but it was more than unnerving for any musicians out in the audience (like myself). The choreography was incredibly well done. Having seen a few other Donald Byrd pieces before, I can honestly say that this piece was the first one that I truly enjoyed. The more palatable second piece of music brought a more familiar approach to the choreography that also worked incredibly well. With nine dancers performing the piece, the fluidity of music and dance was beautiful.
The second piece was strikingly different. “O.D.D.” was light hearted and approachable. The story of not fitting in is a familiar one to almost anyone in the audience. The choreography was creative and fit the musical choice perfectly. I liked the ebb and flow of the humor to the more dramatic to the big finish where we accept everyone for who they uniquely are.
Overall, “Debuts” was a worthy and entertaining mixed bill from the Olympic Ballet Theatre. If you’ve only been to a version of their “Nutcracker”, do yourself a favor and pick up some tickets for their next show - which is scheduled to be the full length classical staple “The Sleeping Beauty” in May. OBT is doing great work and they deserve your attention and support.
