As a co-worker noted, when one thinks of Jekyll and Hyde, comedy isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But with the Phoenix Theatre’s latest show “Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll & Hyde Play”, the laughs were everywhere.

Josiah C.Miller as the lead character was on fire during the performance. His portrayal of both characters was an absolute blast to behold. Physical comedy can be a tough sell if it’s not done right but Mr. Miller had the audience in stitches as he transformed into Mr. Hyde several times during the show. A truly incredible performance!

I think one of the aspects that the Phoenix Theatre does so well with its shows is the setup and then the payoff. It could be the description of a character that hasn’t been seen yet only to reveal Melanie Calderwood as the comic relief (which always works in every show I’ve seen there). This was done to great effect twice during the performance. Melanie’s entrance as Lady Throckmortonshire and her eventual comedic turn as someone affected by Dr. Jekyll’s potion in the second act.

The other familiar face to regulars is the always amazing Susan Connors. She always embodies her characters with such irresistible flavor the audience can’t help but notice her wonderful work.

The cast for this show was particularly strong. Not that previous shows weren’t but this show was a notch above for sure. Some have been a part of other recent Phoenix Theatre productions but for those performers that are new, I hope they return for future shows. All of them were fantastic!

If you’re in the mood for a good time and a whole lot of laughs, “Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll & Hyde Play” is exactly what the good (or should that be bad) doctor ordered.

“Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll & Hyde Play” runs through February 26th. Tickets are available:  HERE!
