THE GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY Broadway At The Paramount June 25 through June 30, 2024 Review
GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY
Music and Lyrics by: Bob Dylan
Written and Directed by: Conor McPherson
Premera Blue Cross Broadway At The Paramount
“Girl From The North Country” opened up last night as a part of the Broadway At The Paramount series of shows at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA. A Tony Award winning musical, with music and lyrics by the legendary Bob Dylan, I went into the show knowing only very minor details.
The show has taken some iconic songs from the Bob Dylan catalog and transformed them into either great arrangements or amazing arrangements. The vocal treatment of the material really captured the lyrical content but supplied a different emotional energy than the originals.
Sharae Moultrie (Marianne Laine) and Matt Manuel (Joe Scott) particularly stood out with their individual vocal prowess. Each performer emotionally connected with the material and conveyed it to the audience in a spectacular way. I was floored by both performers' vocal performances.
The other cast members also sang nearly pitch perfect and they definitely displayed their vocal abilities throughout the show.
I also enjoyed seeing the band on stage (versus the orchestra pit) and it was interesting to see some of the cast hit the drum kit or other instruments during any given song. From the music side of the show, they hit it out of the park.
Now, the story of the show left me wanting a bit more. With any show, play, musical, or otherwise, I want to get immersed in the story and the characters. Unfortunately, with this show, that just didn’t happen. The acting was solid, again the songs were spectacular, but the storyline was just here and there. It didn’t seem cohesive enough to equal the impact that the songs had. It almost reminded me of vignettes in a way or short stories. I think the storyline needs tweaking.
Overall, “Girl From The North Country” was an enjoyable show with a few areas that could use improvement. I can recommend it but with some reservations.
“Girl From The North Country” runs through Sunday June 30th. Purchase tickets: HERE!
