The new film, “She Is …” is a powerful, thought provoking, and inspiring documentary from star/producer Isabella Grosso and director/producer Zuzana Lova.
As a survivor of sexual abuse, Isbella Grosso tells her story and her healing that came through dance. She started the non profit (also called She Is) in 2014 to help other girls that are in similar situations of sexual abuse and/or sex trafficking.
While the subject matter is as serious as can be, the approach to the material is one of hope. Yes, there are heartbreaking moments throughout the film but there are equally uplifting moments as well.
I quite honestly wasn’t expecting this film to be so endearing but it certainly hits you in all the emotional spots. From horror and anger to light and love, the message that the film carries to the girls in the film (and those around the world in similar situations) transfers to the viewing audience in such a way, it almost feels surreal.
In some aspects the film makes the viewer go through some of the emotions that the subject(s) have gone through. To get just a small taste of what a messed up rollercoaster of an experience it can be as a survivor.
I have so much respect for Isabella for courageously sharing her story with the world. And to the creatives that spent literally years putting this film together, thank you as well.
Anyone that’s read any of my film, theatre, opera, concert, or ballet reviews knows I don’t just give out perfect ratings, well, much at all. I always feel there’s room for improvement (the artist's curse, really). But there are rare exceptions and that should tell you something. In other words - watch this movie!
“She Is …” comes with my highest possible recommendation.
