I AM NOT YOUR PERFECT MEXICAN DAUGHTER

Opening Night Review: January 18th, 2023
I absolutely love it when I walk into a show not knowing much about the event and walk out absolutely amazed by what I just experienced. “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” was a perfect example of that last night at the Seattle Rep.
There is so much to unpack from this wonderfully delicious show that it may take repeated shows to fully appreciate (not that one performance won’t but much like a classic film, the more you watch it the more you pick up on some of the details you missed the first time around).
As a matter of fact, I highly recommend you don’t spend too much time researching what the show is about (it’s based on a popular novel by Erika L. Sanchez so for some of you that may be an impossible feat if you’ve already read the book). As always I don’t spend time going over plots in my reviews. I'd rather you go in and see the show for yourself.
What I can say is that the story is such a rollercoaster of comedy, tragedy, social stereotypes, coming of age truths, and commentary on (some) Mexican families that it also yields aspects that almost anyone (maybe everyone) can relate to in some way, shape, or form.
The cast, many of whom are from the Chicago group where the show world premiered, are so skilled at each of their respective roles (and many play multiple characters).
The astonishing Karen Rodriguez as the main character of Julia was everything you could want a theatre actor to be and more. Her (pronouns weren’t listed in the program for her so please forgive me if they’re incorrect) comedic timing, dramatic choices, and command of the character of Julia was flat out one of the best performances I’ve seen since I started reviewing shows a handful of years ago.
It’s really rare when I can recommend a show for everyone to see but this is one of them. Go to the link in the next paragraph after you’re done reading this review and purchase tickets for a performance. This show is just that damn good!
