RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA
Music By: Richard Rodgers
Book & Lyrics By: Oscar Hammerstein II
Directed By: Desdemona Chiang
Village Theatre
Everett, WA
Review: 8pm Performance on January 14, 2023
The ever popular story of “Cinderella” brought a large crowd to the Village Theatre Everett on Saturday evening. Certain shows definitely bring out the families and/or the patrons that don’t attend the theatre on a regular basis and “Cinderella” is absolutely one of them. The themes are still relatable today and many a young princess was waiting for the magic to begin at 8pm.
This is an updated version of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. The classic beloved songs are still there but that’s pretty much where it ends. The cast, the costumes, and the entire approach from director Desdemona Chiang is a new take on an old classic.
The cast was diverse which is becoming a more and more welcome sight from all of the local theatre productions not just the Village Theatre (especially since 2020). A few familiar faces for this reviewer including James Schilling as Christopher who dazzled with his performance and particularly his voice. James was wonderful in two Taproot Theatre productions last year and is equally as good in this show.
Kudos to choreographer Katy Tabb for bringing a mix of classic and new with the many dance routines throughout the show.
This incarnation of the show is absolutely fun. It is designed to be a good time and for the most part it is. There was a bit of chemistry missing between the cast members that kept a great show from being stellar but that’s only a minor quibble.
Overall, “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” will please both the old school and the new school patrons. Be sure to catch a performance before it turns into a pumpkin at the end of the run.
“Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” runs through January 29th. Limited tickets are available here: TICKETS
