The new film, “Alice, Darling” is a dramatic look at manipulation and abuse disguised as love. Anna Kendrick plays Alice who is in a seemingly loving relationship that is anything but that. She goes away to a birthday retreat with close friends where more than one truth is revealed.
Where this film really works is the crumbling of the Alice character. Anna Kendrick is arguably so likeable in all of her roles that to watch her succumb to the mental torture of an abusive suitor is hard to watch but also portrayed in a very realistic and necessary way.
If you’re looking for a feel good film, this film won’t deliver on the warm fuzzies. It will, however, deliver in spades on the all too common topic of mental abuse by partners, spouses, and the like.
Overall, “Alice, Darling” is well worth your viewing time. Recommended.
