The new film “Screamboat” docks for you land lovers this Friday May 2nd. While it had a limited release in the theaters, home media is going to give it a wider viewership opportunity.

I remember seeing a trailer for this film prior to “Terrifier 3” in the theater. Due to its professional connection to that franchise (David Howard Thornton, Fuzz On The Lens Productions, etc.), many horror fans expected something in a similar vein with “Screamboat”.

What I can say before you view this film, is to go into it understanding “Steamboat Willie” from 1928 (the earliest appearance of an eventual Mickey Mouse). If you approach the film with that understanding, you’ll find enjoyment throughout “Screamboat”.

The film does its best to act as a live action version of the 1928 classic albeit with modern day twists, puns, and poking-fun-at isms. Yes, there are horror scenes but the approach is very slapstick and tongue in cheek. If you take the film dead seriously, you’ll miss out on the fun.

The princess characters are an obvious nod to Disney. There are lines in the dialogue that are inspired by some of the Disney films and their original scores. It almost becomes a bit of an easter egg hunt while watching the film to see what or who they’ll add next that is Disney inspired.

David Howard Thornton needs no introduction to anyone that is in the horror community. He shines in anything he does and “Screamboat” is no exception. His physical gestures and sense of comedic timing is impeccable as always. His performance alone makes the film worth a viewing.

Overall, through the correct lens, “Screamboat” is a light, horror tinged, romp on the waters of New York.

Best,
