Review: Tuesday May 6, 2025 - 7:30pm Performance
The musical sensation SIX opened up last night at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA. With a great crowd, many showing off their best “queen” outfits, there was nothing but electricity in the air before the performance started.
I had to miss the tour when it was here in 2023 so I had high hopes for last night's performance as well as everyone else in the audience.
Once the lights dimmed and the introduction music played, the crowd roared. Yes, they roared like they were at a concert. This told me all I needed to know about what I was about to experience.
For the uninitiated the show is based on King Henry VIII and his six wives. Each of their backgrounds is given a solo spot via a song with lyrics to match. Inbetween the numbers there is banter, innuendo, and more music and dancing.
Clearly after last night, the show has had a legion of fans since its inception not that long ago. What was interesting was just how many young fans were in attendance (and I mean single digits in age). It must be the songs and the outfits (which jump out at the audience in the best of ways) is my guess.
Since this was my first time seeing any production of the show, I can’t compare it to anything else. I know the fan base is very vocal about who they like on Broadway and the West End, particularly as casts change.
This group was uniquely individual yet they worked together extremely well. It was clear that the vocals had to be stellar to earn a spot on this roster. One needs to be able to dance and act as well but the songs demand top notch vocals and each of these performers on tour can belt it out with the best of them.
Some of the singular songs (sung by their respective queens) were better than others in my opinion. But, they were all catchy to a degree and kept the energy up (aside from the ballads which were beautiful in their own way).
I’ve heard from some detractors that it’s nothing more than an 80 minute pop concert. While, yes, that influence is there (which is clearly attracting a younger generation of musical theatre fans) it still has a historical story to tell and other attributes consistent with a musical theatre experience.
If you like your musicals on the traditional side with Act I and Act II, a certain level of storytelling, etc., SIX may be hard for you to swallow. If you like concerts that are sit down affairs on the mellow side, you may also take an issue with SIX.
However, if you’re like me, and you love all sorts of concerts as well as musical theatre and performance art, SIX will entertain you to the highest level. It hits the stage running and doesn’t really let up for the entire 80 minute performance. It’s high energy, visually fun, and performed by a tremendously talented cast.
Recommended!
