I had heard about this musical (and movie adaptation) but had never seen any version of it so I was intrigued about what the 5th Avenue Theatre was going to present on Sunday evening. I’ve always had a kinship with all things dark so “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” was right up my alley.
Let me first say that the vocals from all of the cast members stood out in such a fantastic way. Powerful, emotive, and rich, the vocal talents of the entire cast really were a notch above.
The story was full of dark humor (which is interesting considering the time when it was performed years ago) which I happen to love. For those that love Sondheim, they already knew the songs and were anticipating their arrival with each passing scene. I was unfamiliar with them but found many of them “classic” if there is such an adjective for hearing songs for the first time.
It was no surprise that the acting was as strong as the vocal performances from the cast. Brilliant use of staging (although I saw the scaffold/ladder stairs again but this time they made sense - see previous review from the 5th).
Everything about the show just worked. “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” was a wildly entertaining romp through the musical theatre darkness that I wish more shows would explore.
