In some ways it was hard to believe that it was just eleven months ago when I reviewed Jake Shimabukuro’s set in Kirkland, WA. In other ways, it wasn’t hard to believe at all. Many things have changed mainly for the better since January 2022 so I was looking forward to bookending my concert coverage for the year with the same artist I started it with - Jake Shimabukuro.

Christmas In Hawaii 2022.

Just like last December 2021 when Jake played the Edmonds Center for the Arts, he brought along bassist Jackson Waldhoff (who I finally got to meet before the show) as well as an additional musician in singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Kawika Young.

Starting off the night solo on stage, Jake did a mix of cover songs launching with “Ave Maria”, “Over The Rainbow”, and “What Child Is This?”

Jackson Waldhoff eventually joined Jake on stage for a few tunes before Justin Kawika Young joined in the fun as well. The trio ended the first set with a beautiful rendition of, “O Holy Night” before taking a short break.

Justin returned to perform a solo song before Jake and Jackson rejoined him on stage. The mix of holiday tunes, originals, and cover songs makes these Christmas In Hawaii shows something special. I’ve said it before but Jake is phenomenal on his own but his shows work that much better when he is collaborating with other musicians. This show was another clear example of this.

The main set ended with “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Rock Covers Medley/While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and “Kawika”.

The trio returned to perform a solid cover of, “Get Together”, which had the audience singing along. As soon as it was about to end, the crowd stood up and gave the band the ovation they most richly deserved.

Having seen Jake live more than a handful of times now, he never ceases to amaze me. When you’re a phenom on your instrument, it never gets old.

I consider it a privilege to be able to cover any of Jake’s shows over the years and this one was one of his best.

Happy Holidays!
