I’ve been fortunate enough to cover a wide variety of holiday shows in the area over the last handful of years (pre and post pandemic). One show that was always on my radar was, “A Christmas Carol by ACT. I was very excited when I received the opportunity this year to review this holiday classic.

As a show with name recognition, ACT has been staging this show for literally decades. It gives you an idea of just how good it is. Many families have made it a tradition and deservedly so. The performance I saw on Thursday evening was spectacular.

Almost everyone is familiar with the story. It is a classic after all. What I can say is this production strikes the right chord between the story, the presentation, how the past affects the future, and how it's never too late to change.

Good old Scrooge was played magnificently by Bradford Farwell at our performance. Mr. Farwell commanded the stage, embodied the character, and took the audience on Scrooge’s journey so well that you could feel the emotion from the audience as the story unfolded. By the time Scrooge had seen (and corrected) the error of his ways, there were genuine moments of teary eyed patrons who got caught up in the glow of the Christmas spirit.

I loved the presentation of Jacob Marley as well as the three spirits. Creepy, spooky, jovial, comedic, and all the other adjectives that you would associate with each character. Amazing work by all involved.

The performance is straight and to the point yet it doesn’t cut any corners either. A tough balance to achieve but ACT absolutely nailed it.

I can see why patrons return year after year to see this show. It is incredibly well done and I left with a little more holiday cheer in my step than when I arrived.
