The new film “The Cherry Bushido” is a throwback to the films of the past from Japan. From the story, the acting, the effects, and the music, the movie consistently reminded me of something from another decade.

The story is solid but it definitely drags on for the duration of the film. There was way too much dialogue for my liking. After the first hour, I was aching for some action or something to take away from all the dialogue. Thankfully, once the climax unfolds, there is a good half an hour of action and visual storytelling.

If the film had been condensed to maybe ninety minutes or so, the creatives would have had a much stronger film in the end. Editing can do wonders sometimes. If the story is told, don’t pad it with extra dialogue just to see it on the silver screen.

There were moments that reminded me of other films and shows from Japan and that brought a smile to my face. So, for western audiences, others may feel the same.

Overall, “The Cherry Bushido” is an interesting film that with a few tweaks could have been great.

Please note I specifically requested to review the Japanese version with English subtitles. There is also an English dubbed version due for release as well.

Best,
