The new film “Offseason” is a horror thriller that does its best to add a new angle on the “stuck on an island” concept.

Where the film excels is the atmosphere. It is dark and creepy from beginning to end. It has a surreal quality to it as well from time to time. For any horror film, the atmosphere has to be right and the creatives definitely got this part correct.

The storyline however is a little loose for lack of a better term. It wasn’t a bad story but it could have been sharper, with more emotional weight to it.

Fortunately, the acting performances disguise some of the story issues. Lead actor Jocelin Donahue gives a convincing performance as Marie. She is in practically every scene so that is a definite plus.

Overall, “Offseason” is a solid horror film and that’s saying something in a sea of ho-hum horror films recently.

Best,
Mark Sugiyama
