As I take steps toward being fully back into concert coverage mode, Saturday evening up in Everett, WA, the popular soul singer Morgan James brought me one step closer to doing what I love to pre-pandemic levels.

The Historic Everett Theatre was the venue with general admission seating which initially threw me as I’ve been covering reserved seating concerts the last few months. Even the last time I was up at the venue, it was reserved seating. In any event, as I ventured in, masks were optional which also threw me. Everett is in Snohomish County which is a different county than Seattle (King County) so perhaps they were following different guidelines. I’d estimate it was maybe a 30/70 split of masked/no masks in the seated area.

With no opening act, the four piece band played the classic instrumental, “Green Onions” before Morgan James walked out to loud applause.

Her ninety minute set was filled with songs from her back catalog, particularly 2020’s “Memphis Magnetic” which was released just before the pandemic shut everything down.

Morgan was in fine form. Her powerhouse vocals are soulful, strong, but also very nuanced. She has spent time performing in musicals, as a part of the Post Modern Jukebox, and as a solo artist. Many in attendance became aware of her prowess from the PMJ - wanting to hear cover songs she had put her soulful vocal stamp on.

She did do a few stripped down covers with her guitarist and husband Doug Wamble - a nod to the many live streams they did during the pandemic. Her versions of “Vision Of Love” and “Your Song” were crowd pleasers for sure.

Doug’s guitar playing was incredibly tasty. As a guitarist myself, I was highly impressed with his work throughout the set. Tight, clean, emotive, and just on point.

What can be said about Morgan’s voice at this point? She is incredible live. Her voice resonated throughout the concert hall and she absolutely connected with the audience. Very much a seasoned professional.

Overall, Morgan James and her band delivered a fantastic night of soul music on a Saturday night in Everett, WA.
