It was a slight bit of deja vu on Wednesday evening as Hawaii’s own Jake Shimabukuro returned to the greater Seattle area. Having just played here last month in Edmonds, the market showed that Jake’s popularity is as strong as ever. He played both venues in 2019 back to back and sold out both which was unheard of for the area.
This show was much more intimate as the Kirkland Performance Center is designed differently than the larger Edmonds Center for the Arts. Accompanying Jake was bassist Jackson Waldhoff who has been laying down the low end for the previous tours for a while now.
Jake and Jackson walked out on the stage to much applause and they launched into a series of tunes from Jake’s vast catalog. As always, Jake feels the music and his body moves accordingly. He rarely stands still. Jackson was also grooving along on the bass which was nice to see.

Based on some of the whispers around me, there were first timers in the audience which was great. You always want to get new fans to a show for any artist.
Jake had plenty of heartfelt banter between songs. He told a few jokes as well - one of which was borrowed while the other two were originals. The laughs just endeared Jake that much more to the fans.
A few tunes from the new album, “Jake & Friends” were aired to much applause.
Jake then performed a few songs solo starting with one of my favorites, “Blue Roses Falling”.

Jackson rejoined Jake and they tore through song after song, ending the set with the cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that started it all for Jake many years ago.
Jake and Jackson received a standing ovation and they triumphantly walked off the stage leaving everyone wanting more.
They are off to perform three shows in Alaska. Go to http://jakeshimabukuro.com/ to purchase tickets.
