SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE PRECARIOUS POSITION Taproot Theatre Company May 15 through June 22nd, 2024
SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE PRECARIOUS POSITION
By Margaret Raether
Directed by: Karen Lund
Taproot Theatre Company
Seattle, WA
Review: Friday 5/24/24 - 7:30pm Performance
The name Sherlock Holmes conjures up very specific traits and ideas whenever anyone hears it. For the audience, this can be problematic as what they believe they will see may not match up with what is presented. For the company, it can be a challenge to appease the fanbase while also presenting a fresh and new take on an old classic character.
“Sherlock Holmes and the Precarious Position” does a splendid job of both. With four actors, they are tasked with bringing the charm, wit, and sleuthing to the forefront but at the same time they have a high dose of whimsy and farce layered throughout the production.
All four actors are familiar faces to most patrons of theatre here in the greater Seattle area. Calder Jameson Shilling (Sherlock Holmes), Nathaniel Tenenbaum (John Watson, MD), Nathan Brockett (Actor 1), and at my performance Ariel Rose (Actor 2 u/s) rounded out the near perfect cast.
As always I tend to leave the plot to the show itself.
The acting was absolutely top notch. It was a case of who’s going to steal what scene next. Truly. The four actors' approach and delivery was the strong point of the production. Their performances were masterful throughout the show.
The story was a bit hit and miss for me. I tend to have a hard time following mysteries in the first place however so that may be more on me than the material.
The show was compact at 90 minutes with really no realistic place for an intermission. Once the case presented itself fairly early in the show, there was no holding back. The audience was in for a wild and fun night of storytelling.
Recommended.
Due to popularity - ”Sherlock Holmes and the Precarious Position” has been extended through June 22nd. Tickets are available: HERE!
