The new film, “The Witch 2: The Other One” is a sequel to the popular South Korean film “The Witch: Subversion”. I had not seen the previous film when I viewed this sequel.
There’s definitely been a trend in the last decade or so (maybe it’s not a trend then) of run times on films going on average two hours. If you see a film that is less than that, it used to feel like it was sub par for whatever reason. But as time has gone on, for this reviewer personally, if it takes more than two hours to tell a story, that’s not a problem. But, I feel some directors and creatives are starting to lack in the editing department or refuse to be more succinct with their stories. If you can tell your story in ninety minutes, then do it. Don’t leave in more scenes just to make sure it fits your vision.
It’s a slippery slope I realize but I would love to see more films that get to the point. In the case of “The Witch 2: The Other One” it really doesn’t suffer from this trend. There were scenes where it could have been a bit shorter here and there but overall the story is complex and it needs time to create the overall effect and impact.
The film is definitely thrilling at times with strong action scenes and the budget definitely shows on screen as well.
Overall, “The Witch 2: The Other One” was an entertaining film and I’m intrigued to see if they release a third film to make a trilogy. Let’s hope they do.
