The November mixed bill from the Pacific Northwest Ballet brought us The Seasons’ Canon on Saturday evening at McCaw Hall. Three individual pieces including the world premiere of Catching Feelings by Dwight Rhoden, Duo Concertant by George Ballanchine, and the North American premiere of The Seasons’ Canon by Crystal Pite.

Catching Feelings was an intriguing piece that evoked a great deal of emotion. Performed in seven movements, the choreography was captivating and intriguing. There were moments when the timing from the dancers didn’t seem as in sync as I would come to expect from the PNB. Outside of that, Catching Feeling was a strong way to start the performance.

I’ve already written about my growing lack of interest in most (note that I said most - not all) of Ballanchine’s work. However, when you put Lesley Rausch and Lucien Postelwaite in the dancer roles, I couldn’t have been happier. Both Lesley and Lucien took the legendary choreography and showed how the masters do it. Having paired more times than anyone can count, they both were pure liquid on stage. Absolute magic.

The final piece was The Seasons’ Canon by Crystal Pite. I loved her work Plot Point last year so I was looking forward to her new piece. And, man oh man, it did not disappoint.

Utilizing an army of dancers on stage, the piece was so full of emotion and artistry that any artist from any medium would have been inspired. Utilizing variations on Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the choreography was just breathtaking at times. I got so caught up in the piece that I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. As strong as the program was, The Seasons’ Canon was the faraway artistic hit of the program.
