The first show in the 2026/2027 season at the Village Theatre Everett opened on Saturday evening to an excited audience. “Ragtime The Musical” proved to be one heck of a way to open the new season.

Featuring an impressive cast of both local and national performers, the show hit the ground running and honestly never let up. Everything I enjoy about a musical theatre performance was on display in this show. From the vocals to the acting to the storyline to the emotional weight, this show had it all and then some.

For those that love songs over dialogue, the storyline is darn near all sung through this show. From Act 1 through Act 2, there are songs aplenty, including stunning solos by much of the cast.

Jaden Dominique as Sarah blew me away with her vocals and performance. Ditto Erick D. Patrick as Colehouse Walker, Jr. He commanded the stage and portrayed the injustice of his character and family in exquisitely painful ways. Allison Standley as mother was equally stunning in her portrayal of her character and her solo in Act II brought the house down. I could honestly go on and on with each member of the cast and ensemble - yes, they were that good. There was no weak link in this cast - absolutely none. They were truly a force to be reckoned with.

Of course the subject matter spoke to how things used to be and how, unfortunately, still are in some ways here in America. For people of color, for women, and for any marginalized group, the struggle is real and the fight continues.

The orchestra only added to the strength of the production as did the set design and the wardrobe. There just wasn’t anything that I found in need of improvement.

I’ve reviewed shows at the VIllage Theatre Everett for a number of years now. I’ve seen some top notch productions there and "Ragtime The Musical" would rank in the Top 3 for me, period.

Do yourself a favor and pick up some tickets for a performance before it ends on November 15th. You’ll be glad you did.

Highest recommendation!
