SECONDSTORY REP "Emojiland: The Musical" June 26 - July 19, 2026 Review
EMOJILAND: THE MUSICAL
Music by Keith Harrison Dworkin
Book & Lyrics by Keith Harrison Dworkin & Laura Schein
SecondStory Repertory
Redmond, WA
June 26 - July 19, 2026
“Emojiland: The Musical” is the latest musical production at SecondStory Repertory in Redmond, WA. I had heard a bit about this show through another artistic friend but this was my first time seeing any version of it live on stage.
The show features a true ensemble cast of emoji characters - most of whom were easy to identify with a few taking a bit more thought before it became apparent who they were portraying.
On the surface the show may seem like a lighthearted nod to technology but within the book is a strong set of sub categories that explore relationships, current affairs, and ongoing themes that are more than relatable.
Each actor got a chance to showcase their talents either within a scene or with a musical number. Other than an actor or two, most of the cast was new to me and they all equally impressed.
I think, and this is completely subjective, with most musicals, the songs are such a big part of what makes them work for me (or not). But, I recognize what I may think is a great tune another patron may not. During the first act, there were a few songs that caught my attention but it was the second act where things really went up a notch - songwise.
Each performer had their own strengths that they brought to the production. So, when they had big ensemble numbers, wow, the voices on the stage really filled up the room and then some. They sounded spectacular.
I have to admit that the first maybe twenty minutes of the first act I wasn’t too sure about this show. As act one concluded I was getting more invested in the storyline. When act two kicked off, that’s when things really gelled for me and I was hooked.
“Emojiland: The Musical” is the type of show that will work for many theatre audiences. It has its light, comedic moments but it also has its serious, dramatic moments as well. The songs are quite varied so I believe many of them will work for a wide musical audience.
With Summer in full swing, there are many options out there for entertainment purposes. Make sure you put, “Emojiland: The Musical” on your list of shows to hit before it closes.
