The holiday season is here and that means many theatre companies have a production on their schedule. This time of year is important to every organization much like it is for every retailer to get those extra holiday dollars while they can.
So, for many patrons, they can’t possibly attend every show between Thanksgiving and the New Year. They have to be selective with their limited holiday dollars and take into account price, dates, location, and subject matter, among other things.
Why do I bring this up?
I bring this up because as a whole the theatre/arts community in the greater Seattle area is nowhere near out of the post-pandemic woods. Single ticket numbers and subscriber numbers for some organizations are up, which is great, but they aren’t where they were in 2019. And size doesn’t matter here. Small, medium, and large sized organizations are all fighting to get their companies into the black and to stay there.
My reviews aren’t necessarily for the subscribers of any theatre company. They are going to go to the shows and formulate their own opinions regardless of what I say. I can say the same thing for families and friends that attend shows. A review isn’t going to sway their decision to attend a show or not. They’re going to go to support who they know on (and off) the stage. I know I do that from time to time myself.
However, those patrons that go to a handful of shows a year or those that only go to a show or two during the holidays - I hope my reviews offer some insight so you can make an informed decision about what shows to attend and to hopefully enjoy.
With that being said, everyone should put Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley from SecondStory Rep in Redmond, WA on their holiday show radar.
The third play in the trilogy from writers Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon as well as director Elizabeth Tanner’s third Pemberley show under her direction, the show also features actors that have played their respective characters two times and even some who have portrayed their characters all three times. It is quite a treat to see the same performers as the same characters over a three play arc in as many years.
I reviewed the first show in 2023, I had to miss the second show in 2024 due to a lengthy illness, so last night’s show was a welcome return for me to the Pemberley series.
The first thing I noticed was the tone of the show. It captured a more light-hearted approach in act one that was reminiscent of another local theatre’s production of the same show a few years back. The playfulness and wit was quite welcome to set the stage for the story to come.
The acting was top notch. I could go through every performer’s character but suffice to say - they were all brilliant. There was a familiarity with many of them (due to having worked together before) which really came across on stage. They seemed like an actual family, sisters, spouses, friends, etc. It was almost like they weren’t acting at times and that’s the highest praise I could bestow on the cast.
Kudos to those that made their SSR debuts with this show. All of you were as strong as the familiar faces - strength to strength there was no weak link in this cast.
Artistic director Mark Chenovick always creates a stage that makes maximum use of the space and this show was no exception. Everything was very detailed and created the world for the actors to bring the story to life.
In closing, Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley was about as perfect of a show as I’ve seen this holiday season. The show, the price, the location in Redmond (with ample free parking), and most importantly - the quality of the performance makes this show one of the top three for me this season.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, if you're debating on what show(s) to attend this holiday season, Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley should absolutely be in the top choices on your list.
Highly Recommended!
