STOMP - the much beloved performance art, dance, percussive, and humorous show returned to Seattle last night at the Moore Theatre.
I haven’t seen the show since its 2019 incarnation. The audience last night was vocal and appreciative throughout the performance which for this type of show always makes it better.
For those unfamiliar with STOMP - the show incorporates dance. rhythm, and percussion on any items the STOMP crew can come up with. Many are familiar items such as brooms, sticks, and trash can lids - staples of the show since its inception. However, they also use items such as grocery carts, Zippo lighters, plastic bags, oil drum cans, kitchen sinks, garbage cans, water cooler jugs - you get the idea.
The show is divided into skits - at any given time there may be one member on stage performing to all eight and everything in-between. Everything is rhythm and dance based. There is also plenty of humor throughout the show. STOMP really is unique and was the predecessor for many other performance art shows.
Having seen the show before, both as a fan and as media, I was pleasantly surprised to see at least a third of the skits (maybe more) were new to me. As much as I enjoy the classic skits, anytime there’s something new to witness, it just makes the show that much better for the repeat offenders like myself.
If I had anything to pick at it would be that some of the cast members were lacking in personality, depending on the skit. Having seen some of the classic skits multiple times, I know what can be done with them with the right cast of characters and last night a few of them came up short in the personality department. But, this is a minor quibble.
Overall, STOMP is still a creative and inspirational performance art production. Always recommended.
Best,
Mark
