The first full length classical ballet that I’ve previously seen has finally happened. It’s interesting as it doesn’t feel like I’ve been reviewing the PNB that long to have a rep come back so soon on the schedule but it happened. Much like a dream.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a rep that I enjoyed immensely in 2019 so I had high expectations for it again last Friday night. With the public knowledge of long-time Principal dancer Lesley Rausch’s retirement after the season, there was an extra weight of emotion in the air.

Her shining divertissement with partner Dylan Wald completely silenced McCaw Hall. I can’t remember the last time I felt such a feeling inside those walls. Every patron was glued to their performance. It was absolutely exquisite. I can’t emphasize that enough. Exquisite.

Just as I enjoyed the production in 2019, the very same reasons shined in 2023. The large cast of dancers pulling from multiple levels of the PNB School accented the current company. It is such a grand group of dancers on the stage at any given moment that it never allows the performance to wane.

Mix in the beautiful wardrobe designs, staging, and lighting, and of course the gorgeous music, and you have a winner. Simple fact.

I said it four years ago and I’ll say it again - this show is the perfect show for those PNB patrons who prefer to only take in a performance during the holidays. This is a great transition show as it has many of the same aspects that people love about The Nutcracker. Do yourself a favor and catch one of the upcoming performances and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Highly recommended!
