UNION ARTS CENTER "frida...a self-portrait" June 6 - June 28, 2026 Review
frida … a self-portrait
Written & Performed by Vanessa Severo
Directed by Joanie Schultz
Union Arts Center
Seattle, WA
June 11, 2026 Opening/Media Night Performance
The best theatre experience for me is one where the performance lingers for days, if not weeks, after. To unpack what I had just experienced and to do my best to comprehend it all.
“frida … a self-portrait” was precisely such a show.
The story of Frida Kahlo as written and performed by Vanessa Severo was nothing short of spectacular. The creative ways in which Vanessa Severo presented Frida’s story, but also the manner in which she did so, was just amazing to watch unfold.
The performance was engaging from the first words spoken. As narrator, as Frida, and as the other characters during the one woman play, Vanessa Severo brought you into her written world and didn’t let go for the full duration of the show.
There was humor, there was sadness, there was disbelief, and there was triumph, all wrapped up in one amazing story of someone that many know nothing about. Her self-portraits have been seen around the world for decades but her story perhaps not as much for the mainstream audience.
Frida’s story is one that anyone can relate to. It is particularly strong, though, for women. The things she went through and the choices she made will resonate with the strength of women the world over.
“frida…a self-portrait” was one of the most powerful performances I have ever reviewed.
Recommended!
