DOUBT, A PARABLE
Written by John Patrick Shanley

SecondStory Repertory

March 29, 2025 8pm performance (Cast 1)

The new production at SecondStory Repertory is a serious dramatic affair, “Doubt, a Parable”. Set in the 1960’s in the Bronx, New York at a Catholic School, the play tackles issues that are still being looked at in the present day.

The show is divided into two separate casts. Check the website for which casts are which dates (if you have a preference).

The level of quality that I experienced in the two previous shows I reviewed here was evident again during this performance. The acting, the stage design, the audio cues, the lighting, all of it was on an expected level which is something to note. Consistency helps audience members at least trust what a theatre company is going to produce. With everything costing more these days, where someone spends their theatre money is becoming more and more of a real issue.

Speaking of the acting, the four actors in the cast that I saw were amazing. Sister Aloysius (Ingrid Sanai Buron) and Father Flynn (Daniel Wood) in particular had many scenes together that were nuanced, emotional, and at times, uncomfortable (on purpose due to the source material). Sister James (Mariah Lee Squires) was a character that the audience could identify with as she was trapped in a do the right thing scenario. Mrs. Muller (Shana Emile) had the least amount of stage time which was unfortunate as Shana Emile’s acting was excellent. Her scene with Ingrid Sanai Buron’s character really brought the tension in the story to a whole other level. I would have loved to have seen more of her character in the story.

Even though the story took a minute to get going as far as pacing, once it did, it never let up until the end of the production. And, even then, the ending was fitting. I’m glad the show didn’t take the easy way out and end the story with a buttoned up solution to the serious matter at hand.

If you’re looking for a serious dramatic theatre experience, with quality acting, and solid production values, “Doubt, a Parable” is precisely the show for you.

Doubt, a Parable runs through April 20, 2025. Tickets are available:  HERE!
