Review: 7:30pm Performance on March 1, 2025
The latest production from the Village Theatre is the classic “Dial M for Murder”. Having only seen Act I of the film version, I was really looking forward to the show on opening night in Everett.
Sometimes going into a show, once I’ve seen the cast listing, my expectations rise if I recognize any of the cast members. In this case, I knew three of the five cast of characters. I have seen both Clader Jameson Shilling (Lesgate) and Richard Nguyen Sloniker (Tony Wendice) in several shows, including at the Village Theatre. Both were just on stage at the Taproot Theatre with the wonderful “Happy Christmas Jeeves”. Angela DiMarco (Maxine Hadley) is someone I was fortunate enough to know over twenty years ago when she (and her then boyfriend now husband) volunteered with my middle school youth program once a week in South Seattle. Angela led a performance art class with my students which was always fun and a great way to reach out to them through the arts.
One of the best aspects of the show was that this was a play where the focus was squarely on the performers and the material. The set was beautiful and it served its purpose well to showcase the performances by the cast.
All five cast members - also including Betsy Mugavero (Margot Wendice) and R. Hamilton Wright (Inspector Hubbard) - took hold of the material and absolutely ran with it. Act I set up the murder mystery and Act II built up the anticipation as well as the finale which brought it all home. There were absolutely no weak links in the cast. None. They were all putting on a master class in theatre and it was a joy to watch.
At times a show can have all the top talent on paper but the show doesn’t quite deliver. In this case, “Dial M For Murder” delivers in every possible way.
Recommended!
“Dial M For Murder” runs through March 23rd. Tickets are available: HERE!
