December 1, 2024 Evening Performance - Opening Night and Media Night
The opening of the new season at the 5th Avenue Theatre brought a huge crowd out on a Sunday evening in December for the perennial favorite, “Mary Poppins”.
I must be one of only a few patrons Sunday night that had never seen any production of the show nor the film(s). Yes, I’ve seen a few scenes but not the entire film. So, I went into this show incredibly fresh.
When every aspect of a production comes together at their highest respective order, you get a show like, “Mary Poppins”. It was absolutely incredible!
The numerous sets, the costumes, the songs, the acting, the ensemble pieces, the choreography, etc. Everything in this show worked!
Yes there was a change in Mary Poppins actors for Act I and Act II but this is live theatre. It happens. It was clear that Mallory Cooney King was having trouble with her voice in Act I. So, in Act II, enter Allison Standley (u/s). Both were uniquely talented and made the show seamless, even with the change.
I could write paragraphs about the entire cast but suffice to say they were all amazing. Every last one of them.
The dance numbers with the full ensemble were just such a pleasure to watch. And the extra catwalk that went around the orchestra pit was also a nice touch. Any time the performers were on it, they were that much closer to the audience which was a plus.
Again, each and every person involved with this production should feel immensely proud of their work. The show was phenomenal and I can’t make a high enough recommendation.
Go - see - it!
