There was a certain apprehensive excitement before this particular show. Washington State was dealing with a weather event known as a bomb cyclone. It had started to produce high winds and rain a good hour before the show was scheduled to begin. Luckily, the storm had not hit Edmonds, WA in force yet but the thought of the power going out was on everyone’s minds at the venue. The lights flickered several times at the venue but somehow the power stayed on for the duration of the show.

Jake Shimabukuro has been touring constantly before the pandemic and most certainly after it. He has been releasing new albums on a similar consistent basis which has been a treat for many of his long time fans. The show on Tuesday evening was a part of his Christmas in Hawaii themed tour. This was my fourth time reviewing and photographing one of these particular holiday themed shows.

Jake brought along veteran bassist Jackson Waldhoff as well as an additional musician in singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Kawika Young. Both musicians accompanied Jake at the 12/2022 show in Seattle so I was familiar with what the show would sound like.

Starting off the night with his viral cover song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, Jake and Jackson focused the audience on the stage. Starting with one of his biggest hits was a great way to get everyone’s attention right from the get go.

The set ranged from holiday tunes of course, songs from Jake’s new album, “The Blues Experience”, and other selections from his vast catalog of albums.

Justin joined Jake and Jackson (the three J’s) at different times during the set. His smooth r&b vocals were in fine form and having a singer always adds another dimension to these holiday shows. I’ve said it before while Jake is phenomenal on his own his shows work that much better when he is collaborating with other musicians.

The trio performed a solid cover of, “Get Together”, which had the audience singing along. The crowd gave the group a standing ovation as the lights (thankfully) came back on.

Jake, Jackson, and Justin sounded fantastic and they gave each fan a great experience Tuesday evening. This particular tour ends on December 16th so go to https://jakeshimabukuro.com/tour/ for more ticket information.

Happy Holidays!
