Review: 8pm Final Dress Rehearsal Performance on November 21, 2024
The new holiday production at the Edmonds Driftwood Players is finally here for 2024. The much beloved holiday classic, “Miracle on 34th Street” (the play).
When shows have built in name recognition, they are sometimes saddled with the inevitable comparison to their source material. Many generations know this story/film/show. I do as well. So, I went into the final dress rehearsal on Thursday evening with an open mind (and a hope in my heart that my power would be restored soon).
What made this show work was the strength of its core actors. There were many familiar faces from other Edmonds Driftwood Players productions as well as other local theatre productions.
David Hayes as Kris Kringle certainly embodied the great character with a grand result. His mannerisms and delivery of dialogue was comforting and truthful. He was the focus of the story so his performance in my eyes was critical in making the show work. And he did a marvelous job.
Annie St. John as Doris Walker was another strong presence on the stage. Her performance made the audience perk up and listen to what her character was going through as the story unfolded.
Asa Sholdez as Fred Gayley was perhaps my favorite character performance of the show. He was mesmerizing in each and every scene he was in. A true stand out performance.
There were many other notable performances from the cast - too numerous to mention in fact. That’s always a great sign (in other words the cast was strong).
If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll enjoy the play. If you’re not familiar with the movie/story, you’ll still enjoy the play. See below for information about this particular show.
“Miracle On 34th Street The Play” runs through December 15th. The entire run is sold out. Please contact the theatre to get on the waitlist for any possible tickets that may become available.
