SEATTLE SYMPHONY "Coraline In Concert" October 30 and 31, 2025 Benaroya Hall Review

CORALINE
In Concert

Conductor: James Olmstead
Seattle Symphony
Benaroya Hall

October 31st, 2025 8:00pm Performance

(Seattle Symphony)

The Seattle Symphony under conductor James Olmstead presented the classic animated film, “Coraline” for two performances to coincide with the Halloween season.

Many patrons were in spooky season colors with some costumes as well. This also included the Seattle Symphony as many members sported costumes during the performance.

While I have reviewed several of these movie with live soundtrack events, this is the first time I have reviewed one where I was not already familiar with the film. So, I went into this particular event cold.

I won’t spend too much time going over the film as it’s something anyone could watch on their own time. What I will say is that I had heard that the film was spooky, even traumatizing, to some kids when they first saw it. While I’ve always had an interest in the darker side of life, even as a kid, I thought this film would have been spookier than it was.

It’s an interesting story with enough quirkiness to separate itself from most of the animated films of the past. This lends itself to the soundtrack/score as well.

The Seattle Symphony really captured the elements of the music perfectly. The score was borderline Danny Elfman-ish and I mean that in a positive way. There were times when I found myself watching the symphony members to see who or what was creating certain sounds during the film. Just like in other events I’ve reviewed, the Seattle Symphony sounded as good as could be.

As I’ve said many times, if you haven’t attended one of these movie performances where the score is performed live you are truly missing out on an exceptional experience. It’s absolutely worth your time to attend a performance.

Highly recommended!
