August 8, 2025 Evening Performance - Opening Night and Media Night
The 24/25 season ending show ”After Midnight” officially opened on Friday evening on a beautiful August night here in Seattle. A mix of jazz, dance, and poetry, the show was not like your typical musical theatre production.
The staging of the Cotton Club worked extremely well. The bandstand was home to the live jazz musicians with the stage in front, complete with stairs that led down to the main floor. In front on both stage right and stage left were tables where patrons got a unique view of the show up close and personal.
The band sounded phenomenal performing many jazz standards. There was in my opinion an issue with the sound engineering, though. The band sounded a bit muffled at times for the type of music they were playing. My plus one thought it was just her with the same thoughts after the show but I told her I noticed it too. This needs to be addressed at future performances as the musicians could clearly play but the sound that the audience was receiving needed tweaking. As a former audio engineer, I couldn’t help but notice this concern.
The vocalists/performers were all engaging and well rehearsed to a point. Some of the lead vocals were absolutely brilliant. The dance numbers were fun and added to the mood of the performance.
The tap dancing numbers were fun as well. They need a bit of seasoning which they will get as there are more performances under their collective belts. Some tap danced like it was a second skin while others clearly looked like they were concentrating on not missing a step. Again, this will come together in due time for sure.
Overall, “After Midnight” was a fun and entertaining show. It’s a great event for a summer evening, for locals and tourists alike.
“After Midnight” runs through August 24th. Purchase tickets: HERE!
