Review: 7:30pm Performance on July 5, 2025
The final show of the 2024/2025 season brings a familiar story to the stage. “The Color Purple The Musical” was one of the shows I was looking forward to this season. Having seen the touring production back in 2018 I had high hopes for the Village Theatre version in 2025. I can say that I was not in any way disappointed.
Normally, with reviews I have something to point out or possibly even something to complain about. It’s pretty rare when a show is so well done that I can’t find any faults with it. “The Color Purple The Musical” is one of those shows.
If you’re familiar with the book or the film from the 80’s, then you know what you’re in for. A serious drama that shows the best and the worst of people. The stage version is a musical, however. So, take that emotional story, and wrap it up in songs that many (if not all) will tear at your heart strings, and you have an inkling of what you’ll experience at the Village Theatre Everett.
I’ve reviewed many shows at the Everett Performing Arts Center. And even though I’ve seen some tremendous shows there (including “Jersey Boys” in May and the run of “Million Dollar Quartet” back in 2019), none of the shows have ever made me forget where I was, that I was in Everett, WA. Well, that all changed on Saturday evening. As Act II delivered the emotional punches to the gut via acting and singing, I found myself transported to the world of Celie (Mariah Lyttle), Shug Avery (Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako), and Mister (Jahmaul Bakare) among others in the fine cast.
“The Color Purple The Musical” was a transformative night of musical theatre. It comes with my highest possible recommendation. Please go see it. Then go see it again. It deserves and demands to be performed in front of a sold out audience each and every night.
“The Color Purple The Musical” runs through July 27th. Tickets are available: HERE!
