Who would have thought that the longtime Swedish pop group ABBA would have their songs turned into a set of films along with a musical that has captivated audiences all over the world? I remember hearing their songs back in the 70’s, which were incredibly catchy by the way, but I never thought they would take on a whole new life of their own, with a generational set of new fans to boot. Yet, here we are.

Mamma Mia! opened up last night to a crowd that knew exactly what they wanted. A fun, group night out, filled with great music and a very easy to digest storyline. As we drove into downtown Seattle, we were picking out people that were walking near the Paramount and saying things like, “I know where that group is going tonight” based solely on their outfits and the group vibe. And in many cases, we were right.

For the uninitiated Mamma Mia! is a show based on the hits from the Swedish group ABBA. The story is rather silly but definitely fun. If you’re looking for a show that will change your world due to its complex undertones and themes, this show is not for you. However, if you want to escape for a few hours and have a fun, let-loose, time at a show, you can’t do any better than Mamma Mia!

Jaylynn Steele (as Tanya) and Carly Sakolove (as Rosie) were the highlights of the cast for me. They had great comedic timing, vocal chops, and just embodied their characters to the fullest. Any time either performer was on stage, the scenes were that much better for it.

Sophie’s three potential dads were uniquely different yet worked well with the other members of the cast. Amy Weaver (as Sophie) did a fine job as the daughter of Donna who is to be married to Grant Reynolds (as Sky).

Christine Sherrill (as Donna) did a great job in the acting department. However, her voice left something to be desired for me. I’m sure there are others out there that absolutely loved her vocal performance but her voice just wasn’t doing it for me. Her voice seemed more suited to a different type of musical than this one. This is more of personal taste than anything else because she sang all the songs without issue.

Overall, Mamma Mia! delivered what the patrons were looking for last night at The Paramount. If you’ve seen the musical before or if you love the film(s) or both, you won’t be disappointed with the show. In fact, you’ll walk out onto Pine Street after the show with the many melodies singing in your head.
