The new season at Taproot Theatre Company kicked off in grand style with The Book Of Will by Lauren Gunderson. The play tells the story of friends that attempt to publish a book of plays by William Shakespeare. Of course there are bumps along the way to achieving this goal but that just adds to the drama of the storyline.

I’ve been reviewing shows at Taproot Theatre since 2018 (and surrounding theatres as well) so it’s always a treat to see familiar names in the cast credits. While it’s easy to say that the cast had no weak points, this cast truly raised the bar. If an actor previously was great in a role, they were challenged to keep up with the other actors that were great in this production, if that makes any sense. So the once good actors could have fallen to ok, great to good, and so on.

In other words the acting was fantastic.

The beginning of Act II was particularly heartfelt with such emotion emanating from the stage that the world seemed to stop. These incredible scenes are why I and many others go to the theatre. The level of acting was masterful and it stayed with me days later.

The story will resonate with many as the quest to get the book published tested the resolve of the friends but they stayed the course and didn’t succumb to the trials and tribulations of such a daunting task.

The Book Of Will is a splendid start to what I hope is another stellar season from the Taproot Theatre Company.
