The second rep this season for the Pacific Northwest Ballet presented two familiar pieces and one world premiere.

Wartime Elegy by Alexei Ratmansky is a piece that this time came across as divided (perhaps on purpose considering the story being told). I found parts of the piece moving but repetitive while other parts were clearly choreographed to be more lighthearted in approach. Life as we once knew it in a war torn country.

The absolute standout for this reviewer was The Window by Dani Rowe. With Leta Biasucci as The Watcher, her dancing was so crisp and tight, mixed with the trademark Leta Biasucci personality which Seattle has come to love, there was no stopping this piece. Divided into five chapters, everything about this piece worked. The cinematic quality of the lighting design to the exquisite choreography, The Window gave the audience a glimpse into the soul of an artist in their brightest and their darkest moments. Superb!

The rep finished with Love & Loss by Donald Byrd. This piece was divided into four movements, some of which worked for me, while others were lacking at times. I felt the piece overall was just too long. If it had been condensed into say three movements or four movements that were shorter, the flow of the storytelling may have worked better for me.

Overall, Rep 2 was a mixed bill of previously seen pieces with one stellar piece in The Window. Let me know what your thoughts are after you’ve seen a performance.
