FAILURE TO PROTECT

The new documentary film, “Failure To Protect” focuses on the (broken) child welfare system. As someone that has worked with many agencies that supported children, this topic hit close to home in many respects.

Typically when folks think of child protective services, they think of some form of abuse that’s occurred and the legal ramifications that follow. This film does an extraordinary job of showing all the facets of what happens when a family tries to get their child back from CPS.

The systematic issues are covered in great detail showing the analytics behind race and socioeconomic status and the correlation with CPS cases. In other words, the number of low income and people of color that are involved with the system are skewed much higher than other groups.

If you have a background, even a background on the sidelines, of working with young people, “Failure To Protect” will be triggering for sure. For those that don’t, you’ll find an eye opening documentary about a subject that is rarely presented in such a factual yet engaging way.

Recommended.
