With a show like Disney’s“The Little Mermaid”, there are certain expectations from the patrons. Children will want to recognize their favorite characters, songs, and surroundings. Adults, well, they pretty much want the same thing as the kids. The 5th Avenue Theatre has produced a musical that will delight the majority of patrons.

However, for those that aren’t diehard Disney fans, the musical will come up short in certain areas. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot going for this show. The visuals for starters. The whole show looks engaging and appropriate for everyone. I particularly liked the creative costumes and how the show brought the animated classic to life.

Much of the cast is very talented. From singing, to dancing (including a tap number), and acting, there was an abundance of talent on the stage Friday evening.

But, for me, the show was one note. It looked great but there wasn’t much substance to it. The eternal charm of the animated film was pretty much missing from the production. I  so  wanted to care about Ariel and Prince Eric. But instead I found myself merely being a spectator on the sidelines instead of being immersed in their storyline.

Again, it sounded good. It looked good. The costumes were amazingly creative.  But, when it was over, I was (I’m guessing) one of the few in attendance that wasn’t jumping up and down with excitement. Instead I walked out of the theatre and asked my plus one for her opinion. It was pretty much spot on with mine.

Kids will love this production and many adults who hold the film dear to their heart will enjoy it as well. I guess I don’t fall into either camp.

Best,
