I was looking forward to the new musical at Taproot Theatre since it had been a minute since the company produced one. I enjoyed the musicals in the past and felt, after their last quality production in June, this musical would be on par with the others.
I am happy to report I was right.
“The Hello Girls” is based on the real life women that were called upon to serve during WWI. Of course the themes of sexism, chauvinism, and everything else that the women had to fight through makes up a part of the story. The other part really focuses on the inspiring tale of facing the odds and coming out on the winning end which is a lesson all of us can learn something from.
I was astounded at just how good the cast was for this show. I mean Taproot Theatre has had some stellar casts in the past but this one really made me sit up and take notice. A few familiar faces (Miranda Antoinette in particular as I’ve seen and interviewed her before) as well as welcome new ones, the cast could sing, act, and hit their choreographed marks with precision. It truly was a sight (and sound) to behold.
The harmonies were exquisite - perhaps not as much of a surprise once I learned a few of the cast perform together with The Memphis Belles - and I could not get enough of the singing.
The acting complimented the storyline and the music and the choreography just added yet another dimension of awesomeness to the proceedings.
Director Karen Lund should be commended for really nailing this show. I mean it was just strong from beginning to end. I can’t think of any aspect that needed revising or tweaking. It was just spectacular.
Do yourself a favor and buy some tickets to “The Hello Girls”. It’s the type of top quality show/musical that Taproot Theatre is known for and I am happy to see the company firing on all cylinders.
Highly recommended.
“The Hello Girls” runs through August 19th. Tickets are available: TICKETS!
