The 2022/2023 season (the 64th) for the Edmonds Driftwood Players kicked off last week with a perennial favorite by Agatha Christie “The Mousetrap”. Directed by Adam Othman (who performed in the same show years prior), the packed Wade James Theatre was ready to be entertained.
The first thing that stood out to me was the stage design. It was arguably the best I have seen at the Wade James Theatre. It expertly set everything up for the performers to begin their tale of murder and mystery.
Speaking of the performers, the cast was good to great. This has been a noticeable improvement that also stood out in last seasons “Holmes and Watson”. There have been times in the past when the casting was a bit all over the place, which I am extremely lenient on, but it must be said that when the casting is tighter, the end results speak for themselves.
I think that as the run continues, the cast will gel that much more together. The first act felt a bit disjointed like the actors weren’t as confident with the material (or show) as they would like to be. One could argue that’s typical of any show during opening weekend but it’s just something I noticed. I have a feeling if a patron were to see the show this coming weekend, you’d see a stronger, more relatable cast of characters weaving their tales on stage.
I recognized a few cast faces from other productions (at EDP and other local theatres) and again they all did a solid job with the classic Agatha Christie material.
Overall, “The Mousetrap” will satisfy the hardcore Agatha Christie follower and the patron that wants to see a sure handed mystery at the Wade James Theatre by the Edmonds Driftwood Players.
