Greetings,

I love the fact that Eclectic Arts has expanded over the last nine months to include a great deal of new arts coverage. Theatre, musical theatre, dance, and opera just to name a few of the new areas we cover. However, I am a music nut at heart and it will always be my goal to keep Eclectic Arts balanced.

Enter The Decibel Magazine Tour 2019 at the Showbox in Seattle. With four death metal bands - two of the "big four" of death metal to boot - this was going to be one crazy ass show. And it was!

Blood Incantation started off the night with a seamless 30-minute set of death metal that also had atmospheric parts. The four-piece got the energy up and held the attention of the Seattle crowd who were waiting to erupt - you could feel it in the air.

Necrot hit the stage and the eruption started. The three piece just went to town on the stage and the crowd responded in kind. The pit opened up, bodies were launched over the barricade, and a great time was had by all!

Morbid Angel strolled on stage and pulverized the crowd with an hour-long set of songs from both eras of the band. Steve Tucker, Trey Azagthoth, Dan Vadim Von, and Scott Fuller ripped through songs from their latest album, "Kingdoms Disdained" which went toe to toe with their classic catalog as well. While their were some equipment issues during their set, the band themselves raged as hard as ever and the audience was in a fucking frenzy the entire time.

Three bands and one band left to go which meant Cannibal Corpse were up last!

If you've never seen Cannibal Corpse, they are at this point "the" death metal band to see live. They've proven themselves over and over again to be the ultimate road dogs of death metal and they continue to bring it every time they play. I've seen the band, now, seven times, and you know what you're going to get at a Cannibal Corpse show - Corpsegrinder windmill headbanging and good naturedly talking shit about the city he's in (Seahawks for instance - since he's a Broncos fan). Pat and Rob riffing the shit out of their guitars (Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal masterfully sitting in for Pat this tour). The maestro Alex Webster leading the way as the premiere metal bassist any time he plays. And Buzz (Paul) back on the kit making his Robert DeNiro faces - this time with short hair - while providing the frantic backbone for the tunes.

The band played a good amount of tunes from their latest studio album, "Red Before Black" as well as songs from the last few albums. Sort of a newer song first half of the set and then the classic song second half of the set.

I appreciated, "Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead" returning to the set amongst the other classic songs like, "Devoured By Vermin" and "I Cum Blood".

The encore consisted of the one two punch of, "Stripped, Raped, and Strangled" and of course, "Hammer Smashed Face".

The pit was in high gear all night with bodies consistently going over the barricade throughout their hour and 15 minute set. By the time the show was over everyone left on a death metal high.

Kudos to the Showbox security staff for taking care of the fans all night long. Lifting fans over the barricade and giving out water bottles as they always do ensured the fans had a fun but safe time all night.

I've covered three of the Decibel Magazine tours and they've all been great but this one really left its mark on Seattle. I can't wait to see what lineup they put together next year. It will be damn hard to top this one!

Cheers!
