April 2, 2026 8pm final dress rehearsal performance

The Cake is the latest production from SecondStory Rep which opens tonight April 3, 2026. The show features Ariel Rose Horton (Jen), Robert Bogue (Tim), Annie St. John (Della) , and Arika Gloud (Macy).

Just a note. My review is from the final dress rehearsal performance so some details may have changed before opening night.

I had seen this show before with a different theatre company. I remember enjoying it and that the story was both comedic and dramatic at any given time.

This version at SecondStory Rep is similar in that regard. While there is humor, the drama is more prevalent throughout the show.

The themes are extremely current for 2026 and will remain relevant until some major changes happen in society as a whole. The play shows both sides of more than one issue and does it in a very direct and honest way.

While the cast was strong, Annie St. John as Della absolutely stood out to me. Her performance was jaw droppingly great and she anchored the show like she had been Della for decades.

The set, sound, and lighting design looked as great as I’m accustomed to seeing at any SecondStory Rep production. Everything has always been top notch.

The Cake is a strong piece of theatre and everyone involved should be immensely proud of this show.
