SecondStory Repertory
Redmond, WA
August 19, 2023 8pm performance
The opening show in the 2023/2024 season for the SecondStory Repertory is the award winning Dancing At Lughnasa, which won a Tony for best play in 1992. Set in Ireland in the 1920’s, the show centers on the life and times of five sisters and their recently returned from abroad brother.
The performances of the cast, for me, was the strength of this show. Each performer on the stage really took command of their characters and brought them to life in unique and distinct ways. In other words, the acting was impeccable and the highlight of the show.
The set design portrayed the time and the place extremely well. It was easy to believe that you were watching a family of five sisters in Ireland tackling the day to day challenges of the time period.
The story itself didn’t really resonate with me. While I have a sibling and can relate to the various traits all sibling relationships go through, the story of the sisters and how fragile certain aspects of their relationships were before it began to fall apart, while interesting, just didn’t connect with me. The acting as mentioned earlier was so spectacular, though, that it helped me still enjoy the production as a whole.
This was my first time attending a SecondStory Repertory production. The theatre is located in Redmond Town Center and the space is cozy with solid sightlines and the room makes for a great place for theatre. I would definitely be interested in seeing future shows here and if you’re new to the company like I am, absolutely check out what they’re doing there.
There are four more performances of Dancing At Lughnasa starting this coming Thursday 8/24 through Sunday 8/27. Tickets are available: TICKETS!
