WORLDS TO COME
Pacific Northwest Ballet
McCaw Hall
Seattle, WA
Review: Friday 6/2/23 7:30 pm Performance
The final mixed bill of the Pacific Northwest Ballet's 50th Anniversary season opened up in grand fashion on Friday evening. A program of two world premieres and one stage premiere, there was bound to be something for every patron in attendance.
Edwaard Liang - The Veil Between Worlds started off the event. A compellingly beautiful piece presented in five acts, the choreography matched the staging and wardrobe perfectly. The lighting design could have been a bit more dramatic at times for this reviewer but overall this was my favorite piece of the evening.
Annabelle Lopez Ochoa - Khepri was next up. A world premiere piece presented in three acts, the choreography and overall feel of this part of the program was distinctly different from the first part. I tend to enjoy watching the larger ensemble pieces to see how well the dancers work together and for the most part they were fluid and seamless.
Kiyon Ross - …throes of increasing wonder was the third piece presented in five acts. This piece I found distracting. The choreography was more of a mix of classic and contemporary which I enjoyed but the wardrobe and some of the music choices left me perplexed (which honestly doesn’t take much these days so don’t read too much into that).
It’s not lost on me that we had choreographers of color presenting works for future generations to enjoy. I will never, ever knock a company for putting words into action. I’ve seen many arts companies around the greater Seattle area due to just that (the PNB’s neighbors in the Seattle Opera come distinctly to mind) which is a welcome sight. However, that doesn’t change things when a piece doesn’t resonate with me. Fortunately, most of Worlds To Come resonated loud and clear.
Overall, Worlds To Come was an enjoyable mixed bill from the Pacific Northwest Ballet.
“Worlds To Come” runs through June 11th. Purchase tickets: HERE!
